April 18, 2013 Meeting Minutes

Thirty members were in attendance.

President Frank Comisar opened the meeting by announcing the need for executive officer nominations, for the following offices: President, Vice President, Secretary and Web Master.  Contact Frank if you’d like to serve or want to nominate someone.  Web Master is a new office created because the club newsletter will be integrated into our new website.

Contest Coordinator Doug French reminded us that the Club Show is quickly approaching.  Your photos need to be ready to go by June 1st.  So it’s time to get cracking!  Start thinking about which pictures you’d like to enter and get them framed.  If you can’t drop off your pictures on June 1st, you can make arrangements with either Doug or Kathleen Crawford-Rose.  The judge this year will be Derrald Farnsworth-Livingston.  For more information about the Contest, dates and rules, please visit our contest page.

Frank talked about the up and coming Club trip to the Sandhills in May.  If you haven’t let Frank know you’re going to go, please contact him by April 26th.  This should be a really fun trip with lots of opportunity to photograph the beauty of our state!  For more information about the trip, visit this blog post.

After announcements we were treated by two excellent presentations. Frank Dye spoke about news photography.  Frank Comisar demonstrated how to convert color images to black and white.  Frank covered methods in Lightroom, Photoshop and Silver Efex Pro.

During the meeting next month we’ll be hearing from Frank Comisar.  He’ll be demonstrating how to Combine multiple images in PhotoShop.

One last thing.  If you want to know whether or not you need to bring treats to the meeting, that information is on our calender.  Just click on the calender entry for the month you’re wondering about.

Hot Air Balloon Festival

From Doug French:

Ditmars Orchard in Council Bluffs has an annual Hot Air Balloon Festival. I have gone the last couple of years and it is always very colorful and beautiful. They do a night glow where the balloons stay tethered to the ground but they light the balloons up like light bulbs. Great time to get up close and get some great hot air balloon photos. This years show is the weekend of September 13-15, 2013.

From last year:

Star Trails

I’m looking forward to our Sandhills Weekend shoot for a number of reasons but one in particular is because I want to try my hand at star trails. I’m told the Nebraska sandhills is a great place for astro-photography because there is very little light pollution out there. If you’ve studied the itinerary, you see we are planning an early start on Saturday well before the sun comes up.

Star trails are new to me so I’ve been doing some research. It sounds like it takes a bit of pre-planning, visualization, and a lot of patience. Also, you have to do some post processing to stack multiple images to get the best effect. So if you want to give star trails a try, here’s the basic equipment you’ll need :

      • DSLR with bulb mode
      • Wide angle to normal focal length lens
      • Tripod
      • Cable release or timer remote
      • Extra batteries
      • Something to sit on for two to three hours
      • Photoshop or other “stacking” software

Here are a couple informative pieces I’ve found on-line:

Don’t forget you need to let me know if you’re planning to attend no later than April 26 and you must reserve your hotel room. Get all the details here.
